Playing for Keeps (2012) - Movie Review

Gabriele Muccino‘s "Playing for Keeps" is a humorous family reunion excitement. Gerard Butler plays George Dryer in this movie who is an ex-star professional soccer player and a motivational dad to his young son, Lewis. His role is not too different from his previous presentation "Chasing Maverick".

George wants to step forward as a sports commentator. He has a breakdown in his personal life. His family is not with him for a long time; besides this he does not have any money to pay his expenditures. He decides to go back to Virginia to patch up with his ex-wife Stacy and their son Lewis. He becomes conscious when he sees that his wife has moved in her life and engaged to get married at the present. She does not stop George to spend time with Lewis.

George gets appointed as a coach for his son's team. This opportunity brings a change in his life. He gets attention of everyone especially, the mothers of his learners as they realize that he is separated from his wife and available. “Playing for keeps” is a humorous movie that depicts the ultimate bond of a father with his son.

When it comes to emotions, Gabriele Muccino has nicely portrayed “Playing for keeps” as an emotional drama too. There are many moments that make you emotional and you feel impossible grabbing your emotions.

Gerard Butler has beautifully played the apologetic father. Noah Lomax in the role of his son Lewis is pleasant. Jessica Beil as Stacy is great and worth watching. She massively portrayed the sensitivity of an anxious mother and as an ex-wife of George. Judy Greer as the sad divorcee and Uma Thurman as the irritated housewife are good.  Rest cast includes Catherine Zeta Jones as a TV executive and James Tupper as Stacie's fiancĂ©. There is no doubt that the supporting cast has been used as comic strips that give the impression of being ludicrous and are worn out.

“Playing for keeps” is technically good and possesses a bit slack background. Robbie Fox’s script is plain, undemanding and has no layers. The tale draws on sports as simple scenery and the movie, indeed, is not at all a sports genre movie. It’s all about Gerard Butler and his splendid performance. Overall, “Playing for keeps” is a light entertaining drama with good sense of humor.
